Another big shout out for help with this trip goes to Ms Huong Bui and the people at Way to Vietnam. Securing tickets for the leg between Hanoi and Beijing could be bought from Hanoi train station, but the information on the Man in Seat 61 made it sound like quite a difficult proposition. After sending out a few emails, Ms Huong Bui came up with the goods and said she could both buy us train tickets and sort us out with a hotel. I paid for the tickets online and Way to Vietnam kept them for us until we arrived in Hanoi.

The hotel ‘La Belle Vie’ on Ngyuen Turong To was definitely a three star hotel and the quiet rooms were a lovely retreat from the bustle of Hanoi. It was a bit of a walk from the Old Quarter but only a short hop in one of the numerous and inexpensive metred taxis.
